3 Warning Signs Your Car's Hydraulic Brake Hoses Are Going Bad

by Aapo Karvonen

While driving down the road, you may have noticed that your car is no longer stopping as quickly as it once did. If so, your hydraulic brake hoses may be going bad. Look for the following warning signs that the hoses have become worn and are starting to leak:

Brakes Hit the Floor When You Apply Them

Normally, when you apply your brakes, the pressure within the hydraulic hoses increases. This increase in fluid pressure then activates your brakes, making the calipers to squeeze together around the wheel and bring your car to a stop.

However, if you have a leak in one or more of the hoses, the fluid is forced out of them when you hit the brakes. This decreases the pressure, making your brakes reactive sluggishly. This then makes you have to push the brakes all the way to the floor to stop the vehicle.

Brake Fluid Level Is Constantly Low

If you notice that your brakes are sluggish, check your brake fluid level. When the hydraulic system is closed and working properly, the level should stay within the normal range.

However, if the fluid is leaking every time you apply the brakes, the level will decrease. You may find that you are constantly having to fill the reservoir to keep the brake fluid at a normal level.

Brake Fluid Squirts from the Hoses

When your brake fluid level is constantly going down, you can check to see if the hydraulic hoses have a leak by looking under the wheels of your car. While you are down there, have someone press the brake pedal repeatedly.

If you see brake fluid squirting from one or more of your hoses, you definitely have a leak and your brake's hydraulic system is compromised. Because there is constant pressure inside they hydraulic hoses while you are driving and hitting the brakes, the leak will only get worse.

Eventually, the entire brake hose could rupture, leaving you with no brake fluid and no brakes. If you see brake fluid leaking from the hoses, replace them before you drive your car again to keep from getting into an accident.

If you notice any of the above warning signs, the hydraulic hoses on your car's brake system are going bad and in danger of failing, leading to a possible accident while you are driving.
