Saving Money With Used Auto Parts For Your Vehicle

by Aapo Karvonen

Cars break down as parts wear out, and no matter how well you maintain them, there is always a potential for a parts failure that can be expensive to repair. DIYers and people that like to work on their own cars often find used auto parts a good alternative when replacing expensive or hard-to-find parts, and some auto repair shops will offer the option for used auto parts when new ones are limited.

Common Used Parts

Used auto parts are not always an option when making repairs, but some common components are available and can help save some money in most cases. Parts like alternators, starter motors, and even complete engines are available from salvage yards and automotive recyclers for many vehicles if you know where to look.

These parts may not be available new for older vehicles, but the salvage yard will often have some, and the cost is typically significantly lower than new ones. If you are working on a vehicle that has been out of production for many years, there may not be many alternatives available, and used car parts can offer you the option you need.

A car that is in great shape but needs an engine or transmission could be destined for the scrap pile because replacing these parts new would be difficult and expensive, but a resourceful mechanic that is willing to work with used car parts may be able to locate an engine or transmission in a salvage yard, clean them up, and use them to get the vehicle back on the road.

Some repair shops will save parts in good shape and sell them to you directly. However, you will probably need to ask if they have a used alternative, or they may not offer them when giving you a price for the repair.

Used Parts As Cores

Often the only option for replacing parts on older cars is rebuilding the components and using them on your vehicle. If you are missing a part, you can buy a used part that fits the car, send it to a rebuilder, or recondition it yourself, then install it in the vehicle.

A company that sells remanufactured parts may have what you need, but they often ask for a core or worn-out part in exchange when you purchase the parts. These cores are the base of a remanufactured piece, but if you don't have one, you may want to consider used auto parts that fit the requirements from an auto salvage yard and use them as a core.

Let the salvage operator know what you need the parts for, and they may have something that tests bad that they wouldn't typically sell but will make a good core. You can often buy these parts inexpensively and offset the core charge by enough to make it worthwhile. For more information on used car parts, contact a professional near you.
