Why Most Used Auto Parts Do Not Have To Be Clean

by Aapo Karvonen

People who are not mechanically inclined and not auto mechanics for fun or profit are often repelled by the idea of used auto parts. They do not want to put anything dirty and old into their cars, which may be fairly new or in showroom condition. If you find yourself cringing at the thought of replacing a part in your vehicle with a used auto part, here are some very good reasons why most used parts do not have to be clean or cleaned.

It's a Muffler

Defined by the work it does, a muffler is dirty all of the time. It expels the gaseous byproducts of a combustion engine. Even if you put a brand new muffler on your car, it will still look quite filthy in a few short weeks. By then, you could set your muffler side by side with a used muffler and not really tell them apart. Therefore, there is not much sense in completely cleaning the used muffler or installing a brand new one if both, by the nature of their jobs, look the the same in the end.

Gas Tanks, Gas Lines and Oil on the Engine

If you have never seen petroleum products spewing forth from the earth, then you would not know how filthy gas and oil makes your car. When you need to replace your gas tank, repair your gas line or flush the burned remnants of oil from your engine, they are all already filthy because they contain products that once belonged in the ground. This is why a mechanic is not about to rinse out a used gas tank prior to installing it on your car. A second and equally important reason is that anything that contains oil or gas and feeds it to the engine should only be delivering oil and gas, not soap and water that could really damage the engine.

Automotive Oils and Greases

All of the greases and oils used on car parts make the car run and function more smoothly. If you were insistent on installing used parts that were devoid of their grease and oil, you run the risk of damaging your vehicle. Tires move because axle grease permits the free and smooth rotation of the tires at high speed. The pistons inside a car's engine cannot move without a great deal of lubrication from oil. It is perfectly normal for cars and trucks to get dirty and be dirty, and therefore it is not necessary to scour used auto parts until they shine like chrome.

With this information in mind, stop worrying about the cleanliness of car parts, and contact a local used auto parts dealer to find the pieces you need to fix your car.
