Crucial Steps To Take When Maintaining Your Garage Door

Clean The Track

Perhaps one of the simplest, yet most important steps is cleaning the track. This part is what makes your garage door go up and down, and in order for it to work smoothly, the track needs to be clean.

This step doesn't have to be difficult if you use a portable air compressor. Point the nozzle of this compressor in the track, blowing out things like dirt, debris and leaves. If some of these things are not coming out of the track easily, you can use a wire brush. Scrub this brush in the track and apply warm water. Make sure the track is completely clean, and do this step at least once every month.

Inspect the Sensors

Sometimes when you go to close your garage door, it may come back up. If this keeps happening, chances are your garage door sensors are not clean. Get a damp paper towel and begin scrubbing the garage door sensors in a circular motion. Then, get some mild detergent and apply a small amount to each garage door sensor. 

Let the detergent set out for several minutes, and then wipe the sensors down with a microfiber towel. Using this type of towel is a good idea because it has synthetic fibers that will not rub off on the sensors. Clean your sensors every month to keep your garage door working correctly.

Have Door Balanced

A more severe problem that might occur is when your garage door gets unbalanced. When this happens, it could prematurely wear down your garage door's motor. This can cost you a lot of money, so it's best to test the balance of your garage door often.

First, disconnect your garage door's motor, and then lift the garage door up. Let it drop. If it comes crashing down to the ground, your garage door isn't balanced. As a result, your garage door springs will have to be reset. Since this job can be dangerous, it is advisable to always have a professional rebalance your garage door.
